JOHN HOLLENBECK
Created somewhere between New York, Paris, Berlin and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Shut Up And Dance focuses on the relationship between music and movement.
Rythm is explored in every shade of its expression and surprisingly, music can sometimes be met in unexpected situations : a table tennis ball rebounding on the strings of a piano, various objects mistreated by softwares, keys from music instruments, hands rubbing together, PVC tubes creating melodies… You can make drums out of anything, as a basis for a powerful melodic writing, where repetitive music colors can meet pygmy music, classical music, electronic music, trance of the Gnawas, or Duke Ellington’s swing.
The compositions of John Hollenbeck, created especially for this program were born thanks to his collaboration with Daniel Yvinec. They are all about the profusion and the density of the classical writing, devided into a serial of ten mini concertos dedicated to every musician of the Orchestra, depending on their personnality and the language they use to express themselves.
The usual functions of the instruments are mixed and confused : wind instruments take the role of drums, the piano is prepared to become a drum itself… This show is all about movement and the sounds of the world that move, cross, rug all around us.
